Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Who is conducting this project and what is its purpose?
Funded by Pfizer, Inc. and developed by the Immunization Action Coalition (IAC), Take A Stand™: Use Standing Orders to Improve Adult Immunization Rates aims to raise national adult immunization rates by increasing the use of standing orders in medical practices. The project is badly needed to address current adult vaccination rates in the U.S. which fall far short of multiple established national goals, such as Healthy People 2020, and include serious racial and ethnic disparities.
What are standing orders?
Standing orders authorize nurses and other appropriately trained health care personnel, where allowed by state law, to assess a patient’s immunization status and administer vaccinations according to a protocol approved by an institution, physician, or other authorized practitioner. Immunization standing orders work by enabling assessment and vaccination of the patient without the need for clinician examination or direct order from the attending provider at the time of the interaction. Standing orders can be established for the administration of one or more specific vaccines to a broad or narrow set of patients in health care settings such as clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, and long-term care facilities.
Why are standing orders needed?
Strong evidence supports the use of standing orders programs to improve immunization rates in the adult population, and their use is recommended by numerous public health organizations, federal agencies, and provider associations. Unfortunately, standing orders are not being utilized for adult immunizations. Data suggest that adoption of this important intervention is inhibited by poor understanding of the benefits of standing orders programs and a perception that they are difficult to implement. Most physicians and their practice staff currently do not have the information and training they need to overcome these barriers.
How does this program work?
Take A Stand™: Use Standing Orders to Improve Adult Immunization Rates facilitates the implementation of standing orders programs for adult immunizations in physician practices of multiple sizes that are currently providing at least one adult vaccine, and provides basic support to these practices for one year. Central to the program are NO-COST, interactive, 4-hour workshops led by a multidisciplinary team of national experts in adult immunizations aimed at:
- Reinforcing the value of adult vaccines;
- Demonstrating the benefits of instituting standing orders to raise rates within the practices;
- Explaining legal principles related to standing orders programs;
- Addressing perceived challenges identified by workshop participants; and
- Providing instructions on how to establish and implement standing orders.
How have the workshop locations been selected?
In order to maximize the impact of the education and training, a mathematical formula was developed to weight multiple factors, including the adult demographics of a region, whether a state has favorable adult immunization policies, the number of large integrated delivery networks, influenza immunization rates, and the presence of key opinion leaders in the region.
What are the benefits to attending a workshop?
Participating practices will learn how they can leverage the talents of their staff to streamline immunization services while simultaneously improving patient care by increasing the immunization rates of adult patients. As a result, practices are in position to improve their quality care measures.
What happens at the workshops?
These half-day workshops, including a working meal, are interactive and designed to engage participants in their specific circumstances. Our experts will directly address the needs of attendees which will be limited to 100 in number. Click here for a sample agenda. No special preparation is needed prior to attending the workshop.
How long will these workshops be available?
The finite resources available to this extensive project limit us to conducting approximately 22 workshops through mid-2016 at various locations around the country. These events are truly a once-in-a-career opportunity for interested medical practice staff members.
Is there followup support?
The Workshop doesn’t end. Take a Stand™ is committed to standing beside and behind you every step of the way while you implement or enhance your Standing orders Program.
You receive full access to direct phone and email support for one year after attending the Workshop.
And we mean support that gets you direct answers, information, and advice with our highest priority.
